MIDWEST TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Midwest Team Championships took place in Shannon, Co. Clare on Sunday June 12th 2011.

150 local children took part in team pattern, team sparring and special technique events over 3 rings.

The team patterns were the first event of the day and the children showed a high level of preparation, with well practiced routines.

In sparring the rules were modified for the younger competitors so that all levels of skill could compete on as even a playing field as possible. For example under 8 divisions wore hogus (body armour) and there was no head contact. Under 10 divisions had the option of the body armour and with only light head contact. The older divisions competed in full AETF rules. In this way all competitors enjoyed taking part in the sparring. Even those who because of lack of confidence or fear of getting hurt would normally take a lot of persuasion to take part in the sparring had big smiles on their faces, because of the modified rules and because they really enjoyed the team atmosphere.

The final event of the day was special technique. This was again done in a novel way. Competitors were divided by age group once more and competed in the high jump event. This was done on an elimination basis and the obstacle got higher each round until there was only one person left. This ended the day with a great atmosphere in the hall as all competitors cheered each other on.

€5,000 raised for Charity

Mr. Gerry Culley, the representative from the Childrens Cancer Fund battled  the bad weather to travel to Ennis to receive a presentation of €5000 at the Ennis National School on Saturday 21st November.

This represented the proceeds from our Annual Sponsored Walk in which students from Ennis, Barefield, Ballyea, Quin and Scoil Muire participated last June.

Mr. Culley praised the efforts of all the young students, instructors and parents adding that their donation was indeed very welcome.  As a gesture of thanks from his organisation he presented the Schools with toys.  Ennis TKD received a DJ mixer which will be raffled in class on Saturday 19th December.

The instructors from each School wish to extend their gratitude to everybody who worked to make today's event possible.

Surprise Presentation

I was really taken by surprise last Thursday evening at the beginning of our Advanced Class. Mr Michael Clune 1st Dan requested permission to address the class and then proceeded to present to me, a beautifully embroidered ITF 5th Dan Black Belt.

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Mr. Clune for his thoughtfulness and also for the major part he played in my preparation for the IIC grading. I hope to be able to repay him by being involved in his preparation for 2nd Dan at the Summer 2010 Dan grading.

On another note, Mr. Clune is now rapidly gaining an international reputation as a regular contributor to a global magazine called Totally Tae Kwon Do.
